Sunderfolk, the latest game from Dreamhaven and Secret Door, is a tabletop RPG where your phone is the controller and your screen is the TV. It’s one of the most fun multiplayer experiences I’ve had in years. Sandfall Interactive’s debut game is a masterclass in presentation, storytelling, and gameplay. You may not have expected to see a turn-based tactics TMNT game, and especially not from one of the most prolific indie teams of the last few years. The color scheme comes from video games, where “orange” loot is often best, with purple, blue, and green tiered loot following. The story is incredibly profound, but it’s not laid on you all at once.
‘elden Ring: Nightreign’ Review: Hardcore Spin-off For The Diehards
Basically, you can’t really complete a quest over the course of the campaign without pissing off one of the four main crime families in order to please another. Cosying up with one cartel might get you cheaper prices at a merchant you’re onside with, but it’ll also rob you of the ability to move about freely within the headquarters of another gang you’ve slighted, inadvertently or otherwise. There are also 40 playable characters, including Sonic the Hedgehog, with unique stats and abilities to experience in the Skill Battle mode. The world, story, and gameplay of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S is bright, charming, and colourful.

As elementary as something like that is, that marriage of play and message is what makes games so special. Like every game in the modern era, Rematch has a Battle Pass and a shop where you can spend real money to get fake video game things. There is, of course, plenty of free stuff, and nothing seems overly predatory yet, but seeing this stuff in absolutely everything is exhausting. Rematch’s gameplay may invoke the glory days of arcade-style games, but there’s nothing old school about this monetization; nothing escapes from capitalism unscathed. Other than that, Rematch feels exactly like you’d want a soccer game to feel. You can dribble to fake out opponents, sprint to get ahead, pass the ball on the ground or lob it in the air, push it for an extra boost of speed (and to fake out defenders), head it or do a rainbow flick.
After playing This War of Mine and both Frostpunk games, to me, developer 11 Bit Studios feels most at home at the end of the world. The Alters continues this trend, but approaches it from a fresh angle. This War of Mine is a sobering survival sim where players take on the role of a group of civilians trying to survive a city under siege in a war-torn wasteland. Frostpunk and its follow-up, Frostpunk 2, are set in a harsh winter post-apocalypse where you are tasked with leading a city through a cascade of calamities.
